The Quiet Fortune of the Omaha Bridge Table

In the 1960s, Rabbi Myer Kripke and his wife, Dorothy, led a modest life in Omaha, Nebraska. Living on a humble congregational salary and residing in a rented apartment, the couple focused more on community service and faith than financial accumulation. However, they possessed a unique advantage that many investors would envy: a close friendship with their neighbor and fellow bridge player, Warren Buffett. While the two men bonded over Rotary Club meetings and card games, it was Dorothy who saw the potential for something more through her connection to the burgeoning investor.

For several years, Dorothy quietly urged Myer to entrust their savings and an inheritance totaling roughly 67,000 dollars to Buffett. Myer was hesitant at first, believing that such a small sum wouldn’t interest someone of Buffett’s stature. It took nearly three years of gentle persuasion before the rabbi finally approached his friend about managing the funds. Buffett accepted without hesitation, admitting later that he valued investing for people with whom he could maintain a genuine friendship regardless of market fluctuations.

The decision proved to be one of the most lucrative moves in personal finance history. Because the Kripkes remained content with their simple lifestyle—refusing luxury cars and sticking to their rental home—they allowed the investment to grow undisturbed for decades. By the mid-1990s, those initial funds had exploded into a fortune exceeding 25 million dollars. Rather than using the wealth for personal extravagance, the couple dedicated themselves to philanthropy, donating millions to restore a seminary tower and support rabbinical colleges.

Ultimately, the story of Myer and Dorothy Kripke serves as a masterclass in both patience and perspective. While much of their success can be attributed to Buffett’s genius and sheer luck, it was Dorothy’s persistence and the couple’s disciplined lack of greed that truly secured their legacy. By leaving their investment alone while continuing to drive an old Chevrolet, they turned a casual game of bridge into a lifelong engine for generosity.
